Charlotte von Stein was a lady-in-waiting to Duchess Anna Amalia. She adored and revered Goethe. In November 1775, they got to know each other personally. Goethe was immediately smitten, even though she was seven years older and already a mother of seven children. Goethe desperately sought her favor, as Charlotte responded, despite her initial infatuation, rather reservedly. When Goethe set off on his 2-year trip to Italy, the relationship experienced a significant rupture. Only many years later did a friendship develop from that forbidden romance, which lasted until Charlotte's death.

Lili Schönemann went down in literary history as Goethe's fiancée. Goethe met and fell in love with the then 16-year-old at a family house concert in Frankfurt. Shortly thereafter, the two got engaged, but after just six months, the marriage promise was dissolved due to their disapproving families. In “Lili's Park” and other texts, Goethe raved about his deep, albeit short-lived love affair, and even at the advanced age of 80, he revealed: “Lili was the first I loved deeply and truly, and perhaps she was also the last.”

Goethe's grandfather Friedrich Georg Goethe lived for some time in Lyon as a trained cloth maker and settled in Frankfurt as a master tailor as a staunch Lutheran after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. After his first wife passed away, he married the already widowed Cornelia Schelhorn and had three children with her. One of them was Johann Caspar Goethe, the father of Johann Wolfgang Goethe.

Johann Jakob von Willemer was a Frankfurt banker and author. As a supporter of the Frankfurt theater, Goethe was his great role model and a close friendship developed very early on. By the age of 24, he was a wealthy man and leased the Gerbermühle as a country estate on the Main. After two marriages and 4 children, he met his third wife, Marianne Jung. The 16-year-old Viennese actress and dancer was taken off the stage by Willemer for 2000 guilders and subsequently lived as a foster daughter in his household. Goethe often visited the Gerbermühle and worked closely with Marianne on literary texts. He raved: "Moonlight and sunsets; those on Willemer's mill ... infinitely beautiful." At 18, Marianne presumably became the life partner of the then 42-year-old Willemer, and after 12 years, the childless relationship was legitimized. Marianne took care of Willemer when he suffered a stroke at the age of 77. She outlived him by 22 years.

Marianne Jung moved from Austria to Frankfurt at the age of 14 as an actress and dancer and later became the third wife of the Frankfurt banker Johann Jakob von Willemer. In Frankfurt, she also met Willemer's close friend Goethe. Willemer invited him for a visit to his country estate, the Gerbermühle, in 1815. He spent over a month here. A lyrical dialogue developed between Marianne and him, and after his departure, there were many more love poems exchanged between the two. At the end of September 1815, they saw each other for the last time at a meeting in Heidelberg. After that, there was only correspondence until Goethe's death. Among Goethe's many muses, Marianne became the only co-author of one of his works. However, both kept silent about this until the end of his life.

In the summer of 1814, Goethe traveled to his hometown of Frankfurt again after many years. There he accepted the invitation of his childhood friend Johann Jakob von Willemer to his estate on the Main River, the Gerbermühle. Here, he fell in love with his young adopted daughter Marianne. She became his muse and, as was revealed after his death, also a co-author of his poem "West-Eastern Divan." At their last meeting in 1815, he saw Marianne as well as his hometown one last time.
